What is RFID?
RFID is an acronym for radio-frequency identification and refers to microchip technology where digital data encoded onto RFID tags or “smart labels” is wirelessly captured via radio waves. The technology is fundamental to the explosive growth of the Internet of Things.
Unlike barcodes, RFID labels can be read from close range or up to several metres away, and do not need to be within line-of-sight ofthe scanner to be seen.

The Labour Problem

Inventory management and stock counting takes time. Supply chain management for most enterprises still involves a high amount of labour and data input that brings with it, resultant human error. Using RFID technology to inject speed, efficiency and increased accuracy into labour intensive tasks frees up human capital for other areas of the business, reducing the number of staff required to conduct these tasks, but also dramatically reducing error rates.
RFID In Numbers
According to the RFID Research Center, which performed time and motion studies on inventory counting, it takes a single person approximately 1 hour to scan 650 items using a bar-code scanner. With a handheld RFID reader, that same individual could count 18,000 items making RFID over 27 times faster on average than barcode.
To highlight the time comparison, in a store containing 90,000 items (the approximated items in a mid format retail location), it would take a person with a barcode scanner nearly 140 hours to conduct an inventory count, versus about 5 hours to complete an inventory count via an RFID reader.
